Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

This class is appropriate for self-taught computer users or for beginners who need to refine their skills for the academic environment.

Prerequisites: Students should have a basic familiarity with computers, including how to use a mouse, create, open and save documents, and how to print a simple document.

Topics Include:

Microsoft Word:

 Formatting text: apply character formats; change the font style, size and color; copy text formatting.

 Format paragraphs: changing paragraph alignment; change line spacing within a paragraph; set a custom tab; add paragraph indents. Create numbered and bulleted lists.

 Editing documents by deleting, moving, and copying blocks of text.

 Find and replace text.

 Check spelling and grammar; replace a word using the thesaurus.

 Create headers and footers that include page numbers and custom text.

 Insert footnotes and endnotes for research references.

 Preview and format a document correctly for printing; change margins; insert line or page breaks.

Microsoft Excel:

 Calculation: Entering numeric and non-numeric data, writing basic formulas and functions.

 Format:  Change font size and type; add color and borders to cells; insert columns and rows, change column width and row height; align cell contents; merge and split cells. 

 Arrange and sort data; filter data.  Create and format a chart. 

 Create custom headers and footers; include page numbers. 

 Set page margins; change page orientation; insert and remove a page break; print a range. 

Microsoft PowerPoint:

 Creating, editing and changing slide formats, creating an outline. 

 Drawing and working with charts, tables, clip art, and WordArt.

 Working with templates and the slide master:  selecting a design, adding, changing and removing elements that appear on slides.

 Slide shows: Adding transitions and animation to a presentation, how to run a slide show, working with notes, printing a slide show. 

 Basic design principles: The use of color.  What to consider when selecting fonts and font styles.  The text:  what to include, what not to include. How to use graphs to add impact.
